Peugeot 308 GTi Review
The loss of the Peugeot GTi range hit hard, and it looked for a long time that the exciting end of the Peugeot range was a dream of the past. It is with enormous pleasure therefore, that the 308 GTi is welcomed into being. Peogeot have bought the 308 GTi back into a very crowded market place, where the likes of the Golf GTi and the Seat Leon Cupra stalk, but the 308 GTi is certainly not out of place here. This is a car that will excite old fans of the Peugeot GTi range, and win a few more fans alike.
The 308 GTi is neither flashy nor conservative. Drawing attention without shocking, the angry yet smooth styling, with dual exhausts, blazon panelling and French charisma hide some exceedingly clever mechanical engineering, which turns an apparently middle of the road 1.6 litre turbocharged engine into a serious powerhouse, delivering 270bhp to its front wheels. The 308GTi is a match for speed and power for its in class rivals, with the 1.6 litre engine never short of grunt, but in terms of comfort, it has them all beat.
The finish is fantastic. Peugeot are modern masters of the interior, and the 308 GTi does not disappoint here either. Looking past the strangely small steering wheel, the central console, through which many of the interior features are run, from the stereo to the temperature, is easy to master, and the sports seats are both comfortable, and remind you that you are sitting at the wheel of a genuine GTi.
What is most impressive about Peugeot’s 308 GTi is the fact that it remains a genuine 5 door hatchback. There is genuine space in the 308, with some practical finishing, hidden only by a thin veneer of some contrasting stitching. The 308 GTi is a genuinely fast, though sensible, 5 door car.
