Peugeot 308 GT Review
Peugeot’s 308 GT is their kingpin in the fast family hatchback market. To survive here, among the Ford Focus STs, the Renault Megane RS and the Golf GTI, a fast family hatch really has to be good. And the Peugeot 308 GT does survive here. Even thrive. It has made its home in this sector through providing genuine quality and avoiding some of the gadget heavy, angry, attention grabbing lines of its less honest rivals.
The Peugeot 308 GT is the practical, comfortable version of the fast family hot hatch. This is an exciting hatch to drive, but its practicality as a genuine five door family car means that it cannot rival the Focus ST for speed or feel, but the internal finish is so much more appealing. Though there are a range of engine options, the standard 202bhp 1.6 litre petrol engine or the 2.0 litre turbo diesel counterpart both produce enough speed and torque to make driving the 308 GT a genuine pleasure. However, they are not the fuel guzzlers that many of the 308 GT’s market rivals are. The running costs are much more manageable than many fast family hatches’.
The family hot hatch is a strange breed, one that, on paper, shouldn’t exist. With the likes of the Focus ST really falling on the hot hatch side of the definition, with little touches of ‘family’, and the Megane listing the other way, the Peugeot 308 GT seems to have genuinely hit the mark as both family and fast. Cleaver front suspension means that drive is surprisingly nimble, and the engine provides enough poke for some real excitement, especially if you turn the radio off and listen, but the family will remain comfortable, able to continue to play eye-spy in the back without having to hold onto their breakfast. There is plenty of space, with an enormous boot, and space for two adults, or car seats in the back, without drama. And, of course, there is no compromise on safety.
